Mount Hagen
PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Mt. Hagen in the Western Highlands Province is a land of colour and vibrancy. With Mt Hagen being a bustling commercial centre from its wealth rooted in the coffee and tea plantations, traditional lifestyle is at great risk. With both old and new ways working together in a very unusual way, Hageners are seen as people of diverse quality.
In 1933, the Wahgi Valley was discovered by Mick Leahy, brother Dan Leahy, and government officer Jim Taylor.
A little while after that, with a well supplied patrol they walked onward to discover the tribes that are now located in and around Mt Hagen. They were the first Westerner's to come into contact with these people. Mt Hagen's first airstrip was then built by the first patrol at Kelua, a short distance from Mt Hagen town.
